If you are an online small business selling products online you would have some level of email list. And most probably you are already sending them your new product promotional emails on a daily or weekly basis. Great!

And if you are a traditional offline business then you would have your own offline customer database that you send monthly offline products catalogue, sales letters or brochures etc…

How about services industry? Are you?

Daily I land on websites and see nothing but home page, services page, about us page and
contact us page and that’s it. This includes technology related companies to. How hard it is to create a simple report which will help people to make better decisions who are looking for such services and solutions. In exchange you can always ask for their email.

Nothing is Free

If they are giving their emails in exchange of your report or some other solution, never consider it as free! You are giving them 30% of your expertise for no extra cost and they are giving you their legitimate personal email in exchange. So it’s a win, win situation for both parties.

But in the long run who is the real winner, you or them? I leave this on you to decide.

You can use it again and again

I have seen client in past that they don’t want to send promotional emails to their customers on weekly or bi-weekly basis and instead prefer to send email on a monthly basis. Because they think people will unsubscribe from their mailing list.

To me it’s like making money and deposit in the bank, thinking it will grow one day by sitting there without reinvesting.

What are the unsubscribe ratio? Did you ever check that?

Every customer base is different you will say and I came across this argument 9 out of 10 times that my customer base is different. But let me ask you this question, is your customer base is just your customer base? And they have only subscribed to your mailing list? or they only buy from you or use your services?

I wish you can check their emails, but I can tell you about my email. I have subscribed to hundreds of promotions and offers and I think accept once or twice never unsubscribed to any of them and still get them in my inbox.

Growing vs. expending your business

All businesses think they are growing because growth is a slow process and it takes time. Later down the line they found the growth they were expecting for this year is impossible to achieve due to number of reasons.

Why can’t you expand your business, business expansion is much easier then growth.

You would think, how?

Well you have your mailing list why can’t you do a joint venture with other businesses. I understand you don’t want to share your mailing list with your competitors and who told you to share your mailing list with your competitors. Your customers have other problems in life as well i.e. they need loan, insurance, furniture, grocery, more money to prosper in life etc… Now businesses who provide any other solution then yours are not your direct competitors.

I never saw any business saying no to getting more business. And at the end of the day it’s you who will send promotional emails to your mailing list not them. In result they get sales and you will earn your commission and I mean really good commission. So if you have 10 thousand customer email list and they get 200 orders out of that mail shot, you get commission out of it and they only get 200 customers added to their mailing list from your 10 thousand mailing list but they do get 200 hundred orders as well. Now it’s time you use their mailing list.

Find more businesses and rinse and repeat and that’s called an expansion in my opinion.

Making More Money from your mailing List

Finding your customers interests is the best way making more money from your mailing list. But how can we find their interests where we only deal with them related to our services or products only?

Now days it’s very easy, thanks to new technology that allow us to gather their interests automatically. By using online tools like Getresponse and Aweber, which allow us to segment emails by their interests.

There are other tools as well but I found Getresponse and Aweber hands down the most cost effective and easy to use systems in the market. They not only allow you to manage your mailing list but in your promotional emails you can make certain words clickable i.e. business growth, losing weight, need money, technology, success and many more… If you know a little about copywriting you know how to integrate those words in your emails and newsletters without losing the essence of your message in the email. As soon as they click on those links Getreponse or Aweber add that user to that specific segment.

Now when you go for Joint Venture you can easily select with who you want to do business with. Because now you know what your customers interests are and you can only send promotions to that related email segment and not to all your mailing list. Isn’t it great!

What if you don’t have a mailing list

No problem! Start one today. You know your industry and you can write about it. First create a report which you think will be beneficial for people looking for solution like yours. If you sell furniture then give them a report i.e. What to look for – 3 must know tips when buying furniture .

You can create report for any industry no excuses. If you think you cannot write a report then pay someone few dollars to create one for you. Go to elance.com or odesk.com and check for copywriters.

You don’t need 100 pages report all you need is to give them a value. Depend on your industry it can be a report from 3 pages to 24 pages tops.

This is your first impression so don’t leave it lose and give them best value in exchange of their email. As I told you before it’s a win, win situation for both parties but in a long run you know best 🙂

Once the report is done convert it into PDF format and get Aweber or Getresponse account and implement their code on your website and start creating a mailing list.

Make sure you use double opt-in before giving them freebies. Double opt-in means, ask them to confirm their email which Aweber and all other mailing tools allows you to do including Getresponse.

E commerce Sites

If you are an e commerce site where you have customer details in your website admin panel or backend? Import all emails into CSV and upload it to Getreponse and Aweber and you are good to go for sending them new promotions, offers or other details.

Final Verdict!

So, what are you waiting for just start utilising your mailing list if you have one and if you don’t then create a report and build one.
