Post panda / penguin, content curation picked up quite fast and I am seeing more and more blogs and websites adapting this technique to increase user engagement as well as keeping search engines happy. We have seen content curation based articles picked up on Google on highly competitive keywords and competing side by side with original articles.

So what is content curation anyway?

Anyone in SEO and Online marketing industry know it very well, but if you are new to this term let me explain it to you quickly.

Content curation is the process of sorting through the vast amounts of content on the web and presenting it in a meaningful and organized way around a specific theme.  The work involves sifting, sorting, arranging, and publishing information.  A content curator cherry picks the best content that is important and relevant to share with their community. It isn’t unlike what a museum curator does to produce an exhibition:   They identify the theme, they provide the context, they decide which paintings to hang on the wall, how they should be annotated, and how they should be displayed for the public. – See more at:

You see I have showed you a slight example of content curation in the above definition. I have taken the content (definition) from another site and gave credit to them.

Why Curate the content, UPWORTHY Way?

I have been noticing UPWORTHY for last month or two. Checkout the screenshot below:

UPWORTHY domain was registered on 14th March 2012. This is not too long ago, now if you see the above screenshot look at the page and domain authority. Also check out the links going to just root domain of this website.

Do you know the 90% of UPWORTHY content is curated content?

Sorry I just made up the number 🙂 I am not sure if it’s 90% or 100% but majority of their content is curated content. If you don’t believe me check the screenshot taken from UPWORTHY home page.

Hopefully you believed me now 🙂

So, why UPWORTHY content is so sharable and why they are so popular?

You see UPWORTHY is working towards good cause. Read below what they have to say;

We’re a mission-driven media company. We’re not a newspaper — we’d rather speak truth than appear unbiased. And we’re not a political campaign — we’re more interested in the powerless versus the powerful than in Democrats versus Republicans.

But we do have a point of view. We’re pro-gay-marriage, and we’re anti-child-poverty. We think the media is horrible to women, we think climate change is real, and we think the government has a lot to learn from the Internet about efficiency, disruption, and effectiveness.

And then there are dozens of issues where our curators disagree with each other — areas where there’s legitimate debate to be had amongst well-meaning people. We try to encourage that debate by curating great pieces of content that represent different sides.

They are targeting not one niche but many niches from one single website. Let me show you how they curate their content.

Curated Content Example

You see UPWORTHY content tick all the right boxes when it comes down content curation. They are also building email list from all their pages. They know if tomorrow for any reason Google changes its algorithm they have hundreds of thousands emails in their database and in order to drive traffic to their website and they don’t need help of any search engines to drive traffic.

On the other hand their Social media strategy is robust. They drive lots and lots of traffic just from social media. Look at the Facebook likes just on this video, nearly 10k and 433 G+ follows. Search engines have no option but to give priority to this page.

A Lesson to Learn

Without shadow of a doubt, content curation is far more easy and fastest way to create more and more content for your website blog. Just think about the topic and start curating content the UPWORTHY way. Add content, video and any other supporting PDF’s from slide share if needed.

Content curation is far more attractive than your own written content

It is true, content curation diversify your content and enhance user engagement. Give your own heading and 3 to 4 line description in the beginning of your article and you are good to go.

It doesn’t matter which industry you are in, you can curate content. It takes less time and increase user engagement on your website. There are automated tools in the market that can help you curate content on a click of a button. You simply give your own heading and description to article and cherry pick the right content you would like to add in your article from different sources but make sure your article make complete sense.
